Identifying Lawn Weeds

Identifying lawn weeds is an essential part of weed killing, without it our efforts can be ineffectual, or worse, inflammatory. Identifying a weed species and understanding how it lives before we tackle it allows us to choose the right method for tackling the weed in question. For example, do we want to remove the weed manually or chemically? If the latter, do we need a selective or general weed killer? Both questions are vital to effective weed removal and neither is answerable without first correctly identifying our lawn weeds.

How to Identify Lawn Weeds

Weeds can broadly be categorized into four main branches: Lawn Weeds, Annual Weeds, Perennial Weeds and Woody Weeds. Annuals are easier to get rid of, providing you do so before they seed to make sure they do not grow again the year after. Perennials and Woody weeds however, can be more difficult to eradicate and may need specialized treatment, or heavy doses of a general, glyphosate weed killer, such as Roundup. Grassy Weeds, however, can be classified as any nuisance plant on the lawn, no matter its constitution or species.
