The Origins of the Lantana Plant

Notoriously difficult to eradicate, the subspecies of Lantana plant Lantana Camara or West Indian Lantana, has become one of the most widespread invasive species of flora in the world. A flowering bush originating in Central America and the Caribbean, the Lantana plant was spread all over the world due to its striking beauty making it a popular ornamental plant. However, it escaped into the wild in nearly every country to which it was exported and has being wreaking havoc in indigenous ecosystems ever since.

Problems Caused by the Lantana Plant

As a result of its berries, which are poisonous when unripe, the lantana plant poses a health risk to humans, especially children, and animals alike. Significant losses of livestock have been attributed to the plant in the USA, South Africa, Mexico and India as well as here in Australia. The lantana plant’s leaves also emit a distinctive odour when broken or crushed which attracts the animals and birds. It is as a result of the spread of its seeds through these bird’s droppings that Lantana is spread over huge distances.
